‘Tis not that I did choose Thee for Lord that could not be
This heart would still refuse Thee Hadst Thou not chosen me
Thou from the sin that stained me hast cleansed and set me free
Of old Thou hast ordained me that I should live to Thee.

Your love had no beginning, no cause in me was found
That you should choose to save me, a sinner strongly bound
But grace not earned or sought for was purposed for my soul
For me, salvation wrought; for Christ paid the dreadful toll.

‘Twas sovereign mercy called me and taught my opening mind
The world had else enthralled me to heav’nly glories blind
My heart owns none before Thee for Thy rich grace I thirst
This knowing if I loved Thee, Thou must have loved me first.

(Tune: “The Church’s One Foundation” p. 186)

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the Lord directeth his steps.”
- Proverbs 16:9

Every believer says with Paul, “God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” The reason we glory only in the cross of Christ is we really believe we have nothing to glory in in our flesh. It is nothing but sin. The only thing I find any real peace, joy, and comfort and rest in is in what Christ accomplished on the cross. When He said,
“It is finished”, my salvation was signed, sealed, and delivered. If any aspect of my salvation is dependent upon me, I have no peace. If it is 100% dependent upon Him…I have peace! With what conviction we can say, “God forbid that I should glory save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Galatians 6:14).

“Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me Thy law graciously.” Psalm 119:29
The Psalmist does not say, “Remove me from liars” - although that is a desirable thing - but “Remove me from the way of lying.” I lie to myself far too easily and paint a picture of my state that is not true! Deliver me from that and give me the grace to come before you in honesty! Only then will I truly look to Christ. And not only that, but “Grant me Thy law graciously.” Graciously bestow upon me the law-keeping of the Lord Jesus Christ. Whatever I have I must have it by grace, or I won’t have it at all.

In Galatians 6:1, Paul speaks of restoring the brother who is overtaken by some sin in the spirit of meekness. And what is the spirit of meekness? “Considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.” The man with the spirit of meekness understands that the only reason he has not been overtaken by the same sin is the restraining grace of God. The man with the spirit of meekness cannot look down on his brother with righteous indignation, but wants to restore him, mend him, and place the dislocated bone back into place. That brother’s sin is a burden to him. We bear with one another in love, and so fulfill the law of Christ! It is the spirit of meekness that fulfills the law of Christ.

The elect love election! That is a fact. When they were unregenerate they had no love for or understanding of election. But when God saves them they become lovers of this holy Truth. Here are two reasons why they love election. (1) Because they love the God of election. Election gives God all the glory in salvation, and that is the heart desire of every believer. (2) Election teaches that God’s salvation is all of grace, and that gives hope to helpless sinners. The elect know enough about their sin to know that if God did not choose them, they could not have possibly been saved. Election gives Christ all the glory in salvation and declares a salvation that is all of grace. That is why the elect love election. Thank God for election!

Kindness is never wrong. Meanness is always wrong! If I am kind to a fallen man, does that mean that I condone his fall? Of course not! It means I know what it is to fall, and I want to help the fallen. Some attempt to excuse their meanness toward others under the guise of loving the Truth, maintaining church discipline, and reproving sin. But these things never excuse or condone any lack of kindness. Our danger is being self righteous to the point of meanness. God give me grace to be kind to sinners like myself. Amen! - Don Fortner

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God
and men, the man Christ Jesus.” - I Timothy 2:5
I must approach unto God by Christ Jesus because I am unholy. God must approach unto me by Christ Jesus because HE IS HOLY. In Christ Jesus, I, a poor sinner, and God, a Holy and Heavenly Father, have an honest and sincere communion one with another. His holiness is not violated and my sin is not imputed but all is washed away. Oh, sweet fellowship! Oh, holy union! Oh, easy walk! Oh, joyous friendship! Oh, happy me! (I John 1:7). –Bruce Crabtree
